Thanksgiving in Florida

70 degree temps, Turkey Trots, a feast meal at Shooter's, game nights and long overdue family time with the Maxwells made for a wonderful Thanksgiving 2025!

WHS Varsity Hoops vs. #4 Rosemount (Tip-Off Classic)

Wayzata's #2-ranked varsity squad lost 56-61 to Gopher commit Amisha Ramlall and the #4 Irish on "neutral turf" at SW Christian for Breakdown's Tip-Off Classic, the team's second game of the season.

Coach Stew pulled Sawyer into the varsity mix for this one as a "7th man", of sorts, and she rose to the challenge with an impressive debut (6 pts on 40% 3-pt shooting, 10 rebounds [5 offensive], and 2 steals).

But, the loss hurt. The team was down 23 in the first half, tied it with 2-3 minutes to go, and then let it slip in the final minute. Hard fought comeback, but not quite enough.

Splash Sisters

Both E & S hit big 3s in their varsity debuts...

E's during an exciting rally when everything was going right for the home team vs. Eagan in our season opener.

S's during a monstrous 23-point comeback vs. #4 Rosemount in the Tip-Off Classic.

WHS JV GBB vs. Rosemount (Tip-Off Classic @ Kennedy)

Wayzata's JV beat Rosemount 53-21 in the Tip-Off Classic, moving to 2-0 on the season.

WHS Girls Basketball Opener (vs. Eagan)

A pretty magical night in Wayzata for the Backer family...

E & S opened the season as part-time JV / part-time varsity players, meaning they will "for sure" get JV minutes, but will dress for, and may also get some action, in the varsity game. Player placement and minutes vary throughout the season, depending on what the team's needs are.

It's spectacular just to make a team at WHS, a perennial top 2-3 team in the state (if not region).

We're proud and grateful they're "in the mix". We'll see what the season holds!

As for the opener, the JV beat Eagan 66-21 and the varsity won 71-32.

Both girls saw action in both games, and often... together. What a night!

E got her first varsity points of the season too (a deep two and a catch & release three from the wing).

Coffee Club

Base Camp's cold brew inside of the Unmapped Brewing building and Heather's baked goods, just across the street, are new front-runners for our new Sunday morning fall flavors tradition.

Admittedly, we're always biased when the establishment allows dogs inside... and when Evie rolls out of bed early enough to join us!

Hornet Basketball?!?

With a little extra time on his hands, the 'old ball coach' just couldn't hang it up after E & S "graduated" from travel basketball... and now assists on brother Joe and niece Lucy's Edina 7B squad.

So fun to dust off the whistle!

BSM State Volleyball

E & I buzzed over to the Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul to support former hoops teammates Syd and Sail and their Benilde St. Margaret volleyball team in the state tournament semifinals.

The Red Knights defeated Stewartville 3-o that morning, but lost to Marshall in the championship.

Home on the Range

As a "thank you" for helping coach the Wayzata girls Breakdown basketball fall season, Coach Stewart (a big "gun guy") and assistant Shawn (a Minneapolis cop) took the grew to Bill's Gun Shop & Range for some target practice.

THAT is an experience. Wowza. 😬

Trojan Madness

One of the best nights of the winter is Trojan Madness, where the WHS coaches announce and introduce their teams, who in turn do a "walk up dance", to a packed house of the youth association's "superfans". The varsity girls demo a few drills, and then a handful of the travel kids join in a few competitions. 

Evie won a three-point competition that evening, and Sawyer sealed her team's "S/M/L" win with a half-court make.

Emotional support letters, food prep, clothing drive, and puppies... always puppies!

Lettergirl

Sawyer got her first varsity letter of her young high school career this fall, in cross country. And, won the "Rookie of the Year" award, as nominated by her teammates.

We're so grateful to have had the opportunity to immerse in this sport and this fantastic, dynastic team. The 4-peat class AAAA state champions is one thing, but the culture, discipline, development are a whole another.

Halloween

The holiday gets "smaller" as the kids grow up, but we still do our pumpkins and spiced seeds.

Sawyer and friends had a small costume party (they're "Bikers & Surfers", BTW) and trick-or-treat'd the neighborhood street for "old time's sake".

(Poor Buster still doesn't know what to make of Halloween yard decor... 🤣)

Jr. All-Star

E joined a quick 3-week Friday night "Jr. All-Star" league to get some reps in defending and handling before tryouts. The ball doesn't move much in these "hype" events, but it's always fun to be on the court... and who doesn't want another "free" t-shirt?!?

More Breakdown

The WHS fall "Breakdown" league wrapped up, with V1 and V2 both going 7-1. 

I coached V2, both girls got reps on both varsity squads. We'll see what the winter holds?!?

Either way, I think we're ready for the season!
